Slot drills are a type of milling cutters distinguished from the drill bit in its application, geometry, and manufacture. While a drill bit can only cut in the axial direction, milling or slot drills bit can generally cut in all directions, though some cannot cut axially. A slot drill is a mixture of a drill and an end mill meaning it can plunge in like a drill then slot across like an end mill. Conversely, an end mill will primarily cut laterally and horizontally. Slot drills will have a flute that comes to the middle and an end mill will have clearance in the centre.
